Women’s Golf
The Olivet Women’s Golf team traveled to Clearbrook Golf Club on Monday, April 5 where Hope College hosted the fourth MIAA Jamboree. The Comets finished the event in seventh place with a team score of 356.
Aynslee Myer and Rachel Webb shared the lead for Olivet’s best team score on the day, as they both shot an 82. Rayna Honsowitz and Jenna Otten added identical 96s, as they both shot 47 on the front nine and 49 on the back nine.
The Comet’s next event scheduled for Saturday April 10 was cancelled. Due to this cancellation, the next event on Olivet’s schedule is the sixth MIAA Jamboree on Tuesday April 13 at the Duck Lake Country Club. The event will be hosted by Albion.
Men’s Golf
Olivet Men’s Golf participated in three events over the past week as the group attended the third, fourth, and fifth MIAA Jamborees.
Hope College hosted the third MIAA Jamboree at the Wuskowhan Players Club on Monday April 5. The Comets finished in seventh place with a team score of 324. Nicholas Hoffman led the Comets shooting a 77 and Cameron Lemon finished in a close second on the team carding a 78 for the event.
The Comets then traveled the next day to the Duck Lake Country Club on Tuesday April 6 for the fourth MIAA Jamboree. Albion hosted the event. Olivet finished in seventh place, posting a 312 team score. Freshman Liam Carter shot a 75 on the day to lead the Comets. Wes Darrow shot a 77 and Nicholas Hoffman shot a 79 to round out Olivet’s top three.
To finish out the week, Olivet participated in the fifth MIAA Jamboree hosted by Trine at the Zollner Golf Course. Olivet finished with a team score of 319, placing them in another seventh-place finish. Nicholas Hoffman carded a 72 for the event, which tied for fourth place amongst all player standings. Olivet’s next best score was Isiah Strand who shot an 80.
Olivet’s next event is scheduled for Monday April 12 when the Comets will travel to the Watermark Country Club. Calvin University will host the event.
Softball
The Olivet Softball team finished the week with a 1-3 record, notching its first win of the season.
The Comets started the week with a doubleheader at home against Adrian. The Comets lost the first game in five innings by a score of 12-0, then dropped the second game by a score of 6-3. Paige Poulter, Lily Eagleton, and Karina Marin all recorded RBIs in the second loss of the day for the Comets.
Olivet then traveled to Adrian College on Saturday April 10 for a non-conference triangular against Adrian, Kalamazoo, and Calvin. The Comets started off the day with an 8-0 loss to Adrian, then beat Kalamazoo 10-9 for their first win of the season. In the win, Kalamazoo committed four errors in the first inning which allowed Olivet to score seven runs on two hits. Kalamazoo fought back to take a 9-7 lead late in the game. The Comets would then go on to score three runs in the bottom of the seventh, all coming across the plate with two outs recorded. The walk-off run was scored by, Kaylee Clothier who was on base via an RBI double earlier in the inning.
The third game of the day scheduled against Calvin was cancelled due to weather.
Olivet is now 1-13 on its season and will next play a doubleheader at Albion on Wednesday April 14.
Baseball
Olivet Baseball finished 0-4 over the past week after playing two separate doubleheaders against Calvin University.
On Friday, April 9 the Comets traveled to Calvin where they dropped both games of the day. Logan Sella and Ben Compton both hit home runs in the first game, a 17-12 loss. Additionally, Matt Fisher and Matt Hewitt recorded three hits each through the first half of the doubleheader. Olivet would lose the second game by a score of 19-2, giving up 17 hits to Calvin and committing five errors.
The next day, Olivet hosted Calvin for another doubleheader. Olivet again lost both of those games. The first game finished with a score of 9-5 in favor of Calvin. Logan Sella finished a triple shy of the cycle while also collecting 2 RBIs. Calvin took the second game of the doubleheader as well by a score of 10-5. Matt Hewitt and Alex Curry both went 2-3 at the plate and scored two runs each in the second loss of the day.
Olivet is now 3-15 on the season and has home and away doubleheaders coming up against Trine on Saturday, April 17 and Sunday, April 18.
Women’s Soccer
Olivet Women’s Soccer team traveled to Kalamazoo on Tuesday, April 6 where they lost their only match of the week.
The Comets were shutout by Kalamazoo in a 4-0 final. Morgan Hopkins recorded Olivet’s only shot through the match, while Mekenzie Lamb played all 90 minutes on goal and recorded nine saves.
The Comets slide to 0-5 on the season. Olivet’s two remaining matches against Adrian on April 9 and Hope on April 15 are both currently cancelled.
Women’s Volleyball
Olivet’s Women’s Volleyball team continued its season over the past week playing two home games against Kalamazoo and Adrian.
On Wednesday, April 7 Olivet hosted Kalamazoo who beat the Comets in four sets. After losing the first set, Olivet came back to win the second set to tie the overall match 1-1. The Comets would lose the next two sets, finishing with a 3-1 loss. Audrey Lama led Olivet with 15 kills, and Makenna Slack recorded 31 set assists. Additionally, Drue Mullin amounted 32 digs over the four total sets which is the eighth-most in school history for a single match regardless of number of sets.
Olivet then hosted Adrian on April 9, again losing in four sets. Olivet finished the match with a team total of 42 kills, as Ellie Louiselle finished with 11 and Audrey Lama contributed another 10. Skylee Bellgraph provided a team-best 21 set assists.
The Comets are now 0-6 this spring and will finish off their regular season at Hope College on April 14.
Women’s Track and Field
The Women’s Track and Field team competed in the Sprig Thaw hosted by Albion, where they accounted for 33 team points and finished in fifth place.
For the Comets, Lillian Albaugh won the shot put with a throw of 11.76 meters and placed fourth in the javelin throw at 27.94 meters. Abbey Johnston also finished fifth in the discus throw at 34.3 meters. Allyson Stevens, Alex DeVault, Taylor Wilsey and Tonya Tepin placed second in the 4x100-meter relay, and the same group placed third in the 4x400-meter relay.
Up next for Olivet will be the Alma College Invitational on Friday, April 16
Men’s Track and Field
The Men’s Track and Field team finished second in the Spring Thaw, hosted by Albion College.
Jordon Butler finished first in two events, long jumping 6.71 meters and posting a 42.59-meter javelin throw. Cameron Smith ran the fastest 5,000-meter time at 16:09.81. 4x400-meter relay group Tyler Peck, Hayden Germain, Jordon Brown and Kyle McDowell finished in first place posting a time of 3:19.47. Additionally, Jordon Brown took second in the 200 meter dash with a time of 22.85 seconds and Chase Mendham finished second in the 800-meter posting a 2:03.08.
Olivet will participate in the Alma College Invitational on Friday, April 16
Men's Tennis
Olivet Men's Tennis finished this past week 0-2, taking losses both at Hope and at Albion.
The Comets traveled only five available players to Hope on Friday, April 9 where they were shut out 9-0 on the day. The most notable match of the day for Olivet came when Benjamin Morrow and Trevor Lewis lost a pro set by score of 8-3.
The following day, Olivet was still limited to 5 players as they traveled to Albion where they lost 8-1. Benjamin Morrow picked up the lone victory for the Comets, winning his first two singles sets by matching scores of 6-4.
The Comets are now 4-8 on the season, and will travel to Calvin University on Wednesday, April 14.
Women's Tennis
Olivet Women's golf was shutout 9-0 in their only match of the week.
The Comets were limited to 5 available players, causing forfeits in the singles No. 6 and doubles No. 3. Desiree Luque Pradas put up the closest match of the day for Olivet, losing the singles No. 1 match by scores of 6-2 and 7-5.
Olivet is now 4-8 on its season, and will travel to Calvin University on Tuesday, April 13.
